Are Regulations for Sustainable Fish Farming Just a Red Herring?

Coastal communities are struggling to protect their environments as plans for building giant ocean fish farms proliferate.

In September of 2021, town board members in Gouldsboro, Maine, decided to draft a six-month moratorium on construction of a planned offshore fish farm in order to consider how to protect the local environment when the project moves ahead. While the town is acting fully within it right under the Maine Constitution, they are under enormous industry pressure. As one fish farm lawyer put it, such delays can “call into question a community’s credibility.” Really? You can read my post on the problems with ocean aquaculture here.
